Davy Spillane 'Caoineadh Cu Chulainn'

...especially for having rediscovered 'Proof' by I am Kloot...

...Genesis's 'I know What I Like'...

...but also other stuff...

The Polyphonic Sprees

Some non-musical entertainment was marked by...

...the rediscovery of The Misfits of Science...

New favourites from September

September has been interesting not just musically...

Coldplay - Strawberry Swing (click on picture to view)

... but educationally...

Good stuff from the 90s

This is the song "Anytime & Anywhere" by Stephan Massimo & The Deli Cats.

Oh, I've always loved listening to it in my teens!! Unfortunately I couldn't find the official video to it where the scenery is in the desert. I don't think that Stephan deserves to be called a one-hit-wonder, as he focussed his work more on doing other projects such as film music! Not everyone is chasing for fame, y'know?

Hard-Fi's Stars of CCTV...

...is another great album that Phil had on his iTunes compilations. Very interesting mix of funk, rock and electronic sounds with interesting vocal and melody themes!! And I L-O-V-E the album cover!! Simplicity rules!!! God, and I love the bass lines on 'Cash Machine', and the beat of 'Middle Eastern Holiday'...just listening to it now :D

Sailing towards the stars...

Just discovered some great music from Starsailor's great album 'Silence is Easy' which was somewhere on Phil's great music archive. I instantly put it onto my iTouch and just love listening to this very distinct sound and voice!!

The voice of James Walsh reminds me a bit of that of Suede's Brett Lewis Anderson. It is like Walsh is begging to be heard, and he is heard! Their hymn 'Silence is Easy' is such a catchy tune but not in a ladeeduudeeduu way but in a way where you want to listen to what the words are!

Re-discovering minidisk

This thing called MD-player or MD-walkman has always been highly underrated.
I bought it when Mp3 portables could only store a total of 50MB/20-30 songs, i.e. when Mp3 was "Scheisse" :-D Those devices called Discman/portable CD-players were shite too, in terms of me not being able to listen to music when going out for a run or riding on a bus. With these blimming things there was no such thing as a shock absorbing mechanism, hence it seemed reasonable to buy an MD walkman. Now during times of iPod touch it already seems outdated, but I think it still has a legitimate position in the world of high-end gadgets. I re-discovered this wonderful thing (a Sharp MD-MT180, and the Sony MZ-R700 Walkman, which a friend of mine just gave me for free) in one of my drawers. Of course it is a bit of a hassle to record tracks the old fashioned way, even worse so...one needs to stop in between songs so that the device is not recording 30 songs in ONE track. You still want to be able to skip a song or play the list at random! BUT, if you want a digital device, that is robust and yet has the nostalgic element of EXCHANGING the song units (=Minidisks), like you did with tapes, then you HAVE to love MD portables. Plus, I payed a bloody € 140,- for that thing, so I better make the most of it :D !!!

P.S.: The good thing about the Sony MZ-R700 is, that it is running with normal batteries rather than a re-chargeable battery as my Sharp one does. The Sharp doesn't run for very long anymore, but it is a better-featured device to make recordings (e.g. you can set the recording volume level :). Good to have em both ^-^

Films I watched recently

I recently traveled to Hanover to visit my best and closest mate from Britain. We decided to spend the rest of the evening watching a few DVDs, so we went to his favourite DVD shop t rent 2 films. Luckily I got to choose, otherwise I may have had been doomed to watch Harry Potter. J. is an ardent Harry Potter fan, no wonder being from near York o_O. He even called me a freak, a nutter for not being as fanatic about it as he is...

Anyway, the first film I chose was one I never had heared of before. It is called 'The Man from Earth'. J. looked at the DVD cover and went "That looks like a rubbish film." But I was insistent muharrharrharr!! When the film began I felt like I had to apologise to him, as it turned out to be a chitchat film, with ONE location and a group of actors..well...acting!
Of course it was exactly that, but the topic, the theme left the both of us too excited to not finish watching it! The dialogues and the acting was so good, plus the whole idea of a man having lived for 14,000 years!! Brilliant...plus the main actor was H-O-T ;-)

The second I got to choose was 'In Bruges' with Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes. Right, neither me nor J. are big fan of Colin, but the story was great fun as well as quite tragic! Watch thyselves...

HOME

...is a well made (well narrated and shot) film about Mother Earth and how she functions...the balance of everything. I love the bright and vivid colours and how the film is narrated. Some may think it's yet another polemic environmentalist's piece of crap. I beg to disagree, though, as I viewed just as a nice, simple and relaxed tale of out Earth...well...so far what I watched of it :D. Damn internet is slowing things up and I have to watch yet another 1hr 20 minutes lol.

here the link

How to lose friends and alieniate people...

... is a brilliant comedy! Gotta watch it - full stop!

Free music:

If you like listen to music for free online, I can recommend Spotify!
It's easy to use and very similar to iTunes. If you can put up with 1 or 2 adverts in between our set of songs (no worries! NOT in the middle of a song!), then just get started!

I found some interesting stuff, including the earlier mentioned Captain Future Soundtrack and David Bowie and Nat King Cole singing in Japanese!!

Unfortunately it is not easy to find exotic stuff like music by Eri Sugai (Japan's advanced answer to Enya) or old school Japanese Techno like that by Sons of Nintendo (no link available), of whom I happen to have a few genius tracks on my old dusty MD. But I guess there won't be any platform where you could find those!

English speaking artists singing in Japanese!!!

The first one is Mr David Bowie singing "Girls" in Japanese:

I kind of agree with Tanutanu saying that he/she was bursting into laughter...but then again, I do have a lot of respect for him and other to actually do a song in Japanese!!

The next artist is Nat King Cole with "L-O-V-E" - I personally love that one!!

Childhood Memories: Captain Future

One of my fondest childhood memories is that of watching a Japanese Anime series named "Captain Future". Not only were the stories brilliant, but what absolutely was remarkable about the German version of the series is the soundtrack composed by Christian Bruhn.

If you happen to know the series...forget the Japanese soundtrack or the English soundtrack! They just cannot compete with the German, and surprisingly much cooler soundtrack :D

oooOOOooo yeah!

Another trailer in the cinema last night was that of Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen
The last 20 seconds of the trailer my jaw had dropped to the floor...it was that - excuse my French - f*cking awesome!!!
Below is another trailer though...not as awesome as the one we watched!

Ah, I found the other one...yes! Still fcking awesome!!!

hmmm...

Also watched the trailer of the new Terminater Salvation at the cinema last night. I am not particularly a Christian Bale fan, but this trailer looks somewhat promising. Will have to make up my mind

Space, the final frontier...

We watched the new Star Trek movie last night, and really liked it. Even though the new versions of Scottie and Chekov may be a little annoying, and even at one point with Quinto's Spock I was reminded too much of his Heroes character Sylar...all together it was a fantastic experience. I can only say, watch it and judge thyself!

Dark City

Just watched the Director's Cut version of this Sci Fi Film Noir, that I learned to love so much since I watched in on the telly for the first time. Like 'The Shawshank Redemption' against 'Forrest Gump' this film had to compete with 'The Matrix' and therefore flopped. I don't mean to put the latter one down - it is a great film in its own right. But the crazy mix of Noir, the athmosphere of Casablanca, retro of different eras in modern human history and a bit of Blade Runner futuristic elements maybe - have made this film so unique. These are only a few genres and resemblances that I can think of. Maybe you can think of more?

Enjoy!

An homage to PG?

Skeleton Boy by Friendly Fires is a very catchy tune - and the video also seems to be an homage to that of Peter Gabriel's 'Sledge Hammer', in the end sequence when it all gets dark and all you can see is starlights and Peter's silhouette. I was hoping for the dancing chicken ;-)Enjoy!

You are a Shining Light

To listen to the song on youtube click here or on the image.

I woke up to this song as it was played on BBC2 Radio. With the repeating and straight forward statement "You are a Shining Light" the song seems to tell us to never lose hope/ belief in someone special, or it is simply a confession of love. Or maybe this song is about Jesus? I cannot really tell, but what I know is that I am in love with the melody line, and as usual Annie Lennox has an amazing voice!
However, it turned out that the song actually is by Ash. Both versions couldn't be more different, and like with Snow Patrol's Run and Leona Lewis' cover version of it, I cannot pick a favourite version of 'Shining Light'. And as for the videos, yeah Annie's video is funny, but not very original. And yes, under water music videos have been there en masse, but still I like Ash's video, too. And it fits the more rocky theme of his version:

Enjoy!

Eddie Izzard announces first UK tour in six years

"Eddie Izzard has announced his first UK standup tour in six years. He is hitting the road in October with his Stripped show, which he performed in a celebrated five-week residency at the Lyric theatre in London's West End last year.

The tour includes a number of large-capacity arenas and will finish with dates at the O2 and the Wembley Arena in December. Tickets for the Lyric shows sold out within 48 hours, so fans should snap up seats fast. Further tickets may be added at a later date."

I am glad to hear that Eddie hasn't completely forgotten about his UK fans. It was getting a little annoying in the past to hear US fans complain that he had not come to state so-an-so, or village so-and-so...excuse me? What were those guys complaining about. Eddie was not seen in his home country for ages.

So, yes...great he's making a return to his roots. Eddie you were greatly missed here!!

Paul McGann to return as 8th Doctor?

There have recently been many rumours about the Series of Doctor Who, most of them were about who is going to be the 11th Doctor. Now that this has been revealed (and I will give that kid, Matt Smith, a chance) new rumours around the 2009 specials have emerged. If we can trust those, than we may expect Paul McGann to return in a special which will be telling the story of the Time War. I hope he will be seen for most of the film and not merely in a 10 seconds flashback. Also, I hope - for him - that he won't have to wear a wig. I like him with shorter hair better anyway ;) Also another outfit would be better...his outfit was just not contemporary, and this is a feature which has contributed to the great appeal of the new series. Anyways, hopefully Paul will return and be able to show the audience what a great Doctor he would have made, in his very own way :) ... 'Jelly babies?' XD

Casino Royale

... is a fantastic sequel (or should I say prequel) of the Bond saga. It is full of action, wit and full body contact fighting (which I'd dare to consider as a feature that is outshining the era's Connery, Moore and even Brosnan!). No fancy wannabe fighting, but pragmatic stunts a la 'keep-it-simple-but-effective'. Like with the Brosnan movies, this one shows a character that has its dark sides and is marked by his past. The cliffhanger is great, and I can't wait to see Bond take revenge for his loss, the love of his life for whom he already resigned from his job. What I also liked about this film was that there were no unneccesary macho sex scenes, something that was a little OTT with Connery (e.g. Never say never). I can't wait to watch Quantum Solace on Bluray!

Pan's Labyrinth...

"...unfolds through the eyes of Ofelia, a young girl uprooted to a remote military outpost commanded by her new stepfather. Powerless and lonely in a place of great danger, Ofelia lives out her own dark fable as she confronts monsters both otherworldly and human after she discovers a neglected labyrinth behind the family home. There she meets Pan, a fantastical creature who challenges her with three tasks which he claims will reveal her true identity." (from the DVD cover).

"Pan’s Labyrinth takes place in a dual setting: Spain in May and June, 1944, during the turbulent period shortly after the Spanish Civil War, and a fantasy world experienced by a Spanish girl, Ofelia, who is given three tasks by a mysterious faun. In the “real world,” Ofelia’s stepfather, the Falangist Captain Vidal, viciously hunts the Spanish Maquis, guerrillas who continue fighting the Franco regime in the region, while her pregnant mother grows increasingly ill. The “fantasy world” is one that Ofelia enters through an overgrown labyrinth garden, where she meets all manner of strange and magical creatures who become central to her story. The film employs make-up, puppetry, and CGI effects to create its creatures." ( from http://darkaeon.wordpress.com/2008/06/22/pans-labyrinth/).

I wasn't quite sure if I really wanted to add this film to this blog, as I stated in my first post, I would put up stuff I like and comment about it. However, after having this experience settled inside of me, I can say after all this is indeed a great film. The way how the director let the girl jump between those two worlds, e.g. how he illustrated both world is phenomenal. The harsh and brutal reality of the facist period in Spain, the violence and sadism executed by Ofelia's stepfather is a world that Ofelia, and probably everyone else in that respect would like to escape. So why not replacing reality with a fantasy world where oneself is reigning a kingdom with ethics, wisdom and goodness, rather than terror and control and exploitation of its citizens.

Why I hesitated to put this film up on here, was that I watched this film, when I already was in a depressed state and didnt know what this film would be about. It's shocking and violent scenes really upset me, but it wouldnt do the film any justice if I wrote "crappy film" just out of my emotional state that time.

Give this film a shot, but preferably when you're in a chipper mood. ;-)
And beware, as there is not really a happy ending to it. This film is all about altruism, according to my partner

もののけ姫 - Mononoke Hime

Set during the Muromachi Period (1333-1568) of Japan, Mononoke Hime is a story about a mystic fight between the Animal Gods of the forest and humans.

On the side of the Animal Gods is San (Mononoke Hime), a human girl raised by the wolf god Moro. On the side of the humans is Lady Eboshi, building a kingdom for oppressed people by cutting down the forest for her iron-making operation.

In the middle of this fierce fighting for survival, Ashitaka, an Emishi boy, struggles to find a way for both sides to co-exist. But the fighting just becomes more and more bloody and all hope seems to be lost... (http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/mh/)

A fantasticly animated fable which sends out a clear message: We should have more respect for nature.

Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain

Amelie Poulain has led a sheltered life - educated at home by over-protective parents, she retreats into a fantasy workd of her own. When she finally leaves home and finds work as a waitress in a Parisian cafe, life is pretty uneventful until a chain of extraordinary events leads her to the discovery of a tin box containing a schoolboy's long forgotten mementos. It is then that Amelie discovers her true vocation in life - helping others to find love and happiness - which she sets about in her own unique and magical way. When Amelie falls in love herself, she realises that making neat solutions is not as easy as it seems...

This film really sucks you into Amelie's own world. You begin to see life through her eyes. A truly magical and colourful film that I can only recommend to everyone.

Love Actually

Now, I know what you're probably gonna say: "What a cheesy film is that?" But what makes this film so special is that there are so many characters and stories cleverly linked to one another. Therefore, I am afraid to not provide a film plot at this point.
Also, it features some fantastic actors, such as Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson and Liam Neeson. And even though I'm not a huge fan of Hugh Grant, I particularly enjoyed his speech to the nation (as the Prime Minister) and his dance.
This is a fantastic addition to your collections of films to watch on Christmas. And to the boys out there: It's perfect to impress your girl on your first date ;-)

Bomfunk MC's

Freestyler is a great and original song that I call a blast from the past. Unfortunately Bomfunk MC's did not continue their success and the following songs just did not have the WOW effect as Freestyler. The video however I've always found a little embarassing...

Time to give this site a little meaning

After my partner set up a blog about his taste in music (see "inner sound network") I thought I should stop posting personal or silly stuff, as I did on previous pages. So this is a blog to widen my knowledge and tastes in music, films, arts, acting and entertainment. This can be through active but decent discussions and further suggestions from other bloggers, so please feel free to add comments, ideas and thoughts.
Aw'ra best ...
